Press Statement
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) worldwide led by Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu shall on the 30th of May 2018 be honoring and remembering the millions of victims of the Biafran Genocide which include victims of all the pogroms carried out in the Arewa Northern Nigeria from 1945 to present, those killed during the Biafran Genocide as well as present victims of Nigerian State sponsored acts of terror and violence who were murdered in cold blood by the trigger happy Nigerian security forces for exercising their inalienable right to Self determination. We will also be remembering all those massacred in Benue, Jos, Kogi, Taraba, Enugwu, Adamawa, Southern Kaduna and western Nigeria by the Fulani Janjaweed Herdsmen
The Biafran people are very much aware of the existence of a policy of the Nigerian ruling class represented by the Hausa/Fulani/Yoruba Oligarchy, spearheaded by the evil Sokoto Caliphate and tailored towards achieving both the political, cultural and economical emasculation and annihilation of the Biafran people, as well as to ethnically cleanse Biafrans from Nigeria and from our homeland. As a result of this conspiracy, the Indigenous People of Biafra have suffered untold hardship, threats to their culture and tradition, assault on our value system and a near complete waste of our environment. It was this aspiration to ethnically remove Biafrans from our homeland a place wherein we have inhabited and developed a civilization which pre-dates the Greek and Roman civilization that culminated in a war of annihilation imposed upon the Biafran people by the Nigerian government in collaboration with the British government and their allies. This was after a series of well planned and well executed acts of pogroms perpetrated under the watch of Britain the then Colonial government.
On the 22nd of June 1945, the massacre of Biafrans commenced in Jos and hundreds of Biafrans were murdered by the Hausa-Fulani while tens of thousands of pounds sterling worth of Biafran people’s properties were either looted or ruined. Nobody was held accountable, nobody was arrested and none was prosecuted by the British Colonial government. As a matter of fact the British refused to institute an inquiry into the bestial and gruesome murder of a section of the populace and wanton destruction of their properties. Fast forward Kano 1953, thousands more Biafrans, their families and properties were again targets of ethnic cleansing under the supervision of the British overlords. From 1954 to October 1966, more than 30,000 Biafrans were killed in Northern Nigeria, and between October 1966 and June 1967 more than 300,000 more were massacred. In a most brutish and gruesome manner, pregnant women were killed, their unborn babies pulled out of their wombs, received a most gruesome and barbaric end while other victims had their eyes gorged, arms and limbs amputated, and heads chopped off. It was a most graphic animalistic tendency ever exhibited in Africa These were barbaric and horrifying crimes against humanity in an indescribable scale. Bear in mind that all these killings were done in peace time, without provocation and with evidence of complicity on the part of local and national authority at the time be it the colonial British government or the Nigerian puppet government. Then from July 6, 1967–January 15, 1970 a large scale program of total extermination of the Indigenous People of Biafra termed the final solution to the Biafran problem was initiated. More than five (5) million Biafrans representing close to 15% of the total population of the Biafran people were exterminated in a most inhuman and ghastly manner by Nigeria fully backed, supported and militarily equipped by the British during which more than three (3) million civilians especially women and children died from starvation because of the British Government supervised air, land, and sea blockade of the Biafran territory. The killings have continued unabated from 1970 to the present resulting in the death of millions more of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

These victims of the pogroms in Northern Nigeria, of the Biafran genocide and those murdered in cold blood for exercising their inalienable right to Self determination by the trigger happy Nigerian security forces are our Heroes and Heroines. They paid the ultimate price for our collective dignity and freedom and it is in their honor that we observe and shall observe till the end of time 30th May of each year as a day to remember, acknowledge and appreciate the sacrifices they made on our behalf.
For the past five consecutive years, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) worldwide led by Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu have remembered and honored Biafran heroes and heroines’ men, women and children who gave their life for our liberty who sacrificed all for posterity. This tradition continues This tradition continues this year and on May 30th, 2018 Biafrans will again gather in more than 120 countries around the world to remember, pay their respect and honor these great men, women and children victims of the Biafran Genocide and our Heroes and Heroines as well as those massacred in Benue, Jos, Kogi, Taraba, Enugwu, Adamawa, Southern Kaduna and western Nigeria by the Fulani Janjaweed Herdsmen. This year’s remembrance is unique in that victims of Islamic Jihadists under the cover of Boko Haram and Fulani Herdsmen especially the Christian community in the Middle Belt will also be remembered and honored. During the period since after the Biafran genocide, our land has been raped and degraded in such a horrific manner that our youths, driven into hopelessness and desperation embark upon suicidal journeys across the desert and the Atlantic just to get out of the hell that is Nigeria, anywhere other than Nigeria is preferred by these youths.
Although we are yet to have that freedom for which they died for, remembering and honoring their sacrifice constantly reminds us of the obligation we owe them and of our duty not to relent until total freedom and liberty for which they died are achieved. As has been our usage, Biafrans in the whole of Biafraland shall observe a SIT-AT-HOME in honor of our fallen Heroes and Heroines and in the honor of all the victims of the horror of Fulani Herdsmen and Boko Haram. In more than 120 countries around the world, Biafrans will gather and rally in public places in the capitals and cities of these countries.
We urge the world to relieve itself of the moral burden that has been on their conscience for more than five decades and counting and speak up for the oppressed Indigenous People of Biafra.
We urge the Media both local and international to use this years 30th of May Remembrance of the Biafran genocide to remove the seal of conspiracy and silence they have placed on this blight on human conscience. We urge all men and women of conscience not to relent in their efforts to ensure that justice in practical terms is done to the Indigenous People of Biafrans for the crimes committed against them.
Finally, we urge the indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) worldwide to remain resolute in their pursuit for freedom. We urge them to maintain the discipline for which the world has now come to associate IPOB with. We urge them to remain firm in their conviction of the justness of our course. We urge them to reject every form of irritation and distraction and focus on our objective which is the restoration of the Sovereign and Independent nation of Biafra as that is the only way the souls of millions of our dead Heroes and Heroines will have rest and accorded the honor due to them.
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) worldwide led by Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu affirms our inalienable right to determine our cultural, economic and political system, as well as our right to Self-determination as guaranteed and proclaimed by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of the Indigenous peoples to Self-Determination and Articles V, VI, VII and XII of the African Charter on Human & Peoples Rights (ratified and domesticated by Nigeria in 1983.
